01 · A fresh approach

Three months waiting. Two weeks to deliver.

When the customer approached Durant Lifts, the passenger lift at Arthur Stanley House had been out of service for around three months. It had failed its LOLER inspection and been isolated. Despite repair attempts and a succession of quotations, the lift remained unavailable.

For the customer and tenants, the disruption had gone on long enough. The customer began looking for an independent lift company that could take on the problem and see the work through.

Durant Lifts was given a clear brief: get the lift back into service within two weeks. With a nine-stop lift and a 4:1 roping arrangement, the work presented a substantial challenge for our engineering team.

02 · The rope replacement

Nine suspension ropes. One demanding job.

Our team replaced all nine suspension ropes, each 120 metres long. That is 1,080 metres of suspension rope in total, more than a kilometre of rope installed during the project. The scale of the job was shaped by the lift’s nine stops and its 4:1 roping arrangement, with the ropes following a route through multiple sheaves.

This was a job that called for careful planning and close coordination. Each stage of the replacement had to be worked through methodically, with the team focused on completing the work within the customer’s short programme.

We completed the rope replacement and returned the lift to service before the two-week deadline. After around three months of disruption, the customer and tenants could use the lift again.

03 · Confidence earned

A successful repair. A lasting relationship.

Meeting the deadline resolved the immediate problem and gave the customer confidence in our team. Following the successful repair, Durant Lifts was awarded the maintenance contract for the building’s three passenger lifts and one platform lift.

What began as an urgent rope replacement became an ongoing relationship. Our team now looks after all four lifts, building on the knowledge gained during the repair and giving the customer a familiar engineering team to turn to.
